What Does It Come With? The xDrive28i is available with only one engine: a 2.0-liter inline, 4-cylinder engine rated at 228 horsepower that's coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission. With a $995 destination charge, the final sticker rings up at $43,945. Our test car also includes a $550 Cold Weather package, a $1,150 Driver Assistance package, a $3,250 Premium Package, a $2,550 Technology Package, an optional $300 slide-and-recline rear seat, and a $350 wood Fineline trim option. How Much? The BMW X1 xDrive28i is available in only one trim level that has a base price of $34,800. In addition, a lot of amenities that you think would be standard, like a rearview camera, cost extra. And although Minis aren't exactly snails, the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine is less powerful than the one of the outgoing X1. The X1 also now shares a front-wheel drive architecture with corporate sibling Mini Cooper, and is no longer based on the rear-wheel drive 3 Series. Taller and wider, it's much roomier on the inside, while the sheet metal has an eye-catching look. The all-new 2016 BMW X1 xDrive28i is almost the opposite. Previous models were fun to drive, but had an odd look and exceptionally tight passenger space. But we never felt that way about the baby BMW X1 entry-level crossover. All infotainment should be this easy.We consistently find that we prefer most things about BMW cars compared with the competition, such as comfort, performance, and tech. It takes a little getting used to, but the controller has a certain kind of fluid accuracy that makes it a pleasure to operate. Related functions within a submenu can be accessed by moving the controller to the left and right or forward and back. Choose one of the four main functions via its respective physical button, and it's a breeze to scroll through a vertical list of items using the controller until it highlights the feature you want, then select it by pushing down. Maybe it's because we've gotten used to iDrive over the years, but we find the menu structure is very simple to navigate. Right below the controller is a Back button, as well as an Option button that can be programmed to access a favorite function not covered by the other controls. Media and Radio are on one side, Telephone and Navigation are on the other, and a Menu button sits in-between.
